Josh Hazlewood, a fast bowler, made the suggestion that Australia, who have already qualified for the Super 8, might not play to their best ability against Scotland in order to guarantee that England is eliminated.
If England wins against Oman and Namibia, they can tie Scotland’s five points, but they will need to do it with such conviction that they must hope Australia wins by a large enough margin to allow the reigning champions’ net run-rate to exceed that of their opponents.
Hazlewood’s remarks regarding perhaps altering the net run-rate were seen to be “tongue in cheek” by England coach Matthew Mott.
Jones, who acknowledges that he wants to advance “in any way that it can come,” stated, “I was watching it live and I was laughing.”
“Australia and England have a fierce rivalry, and if Australia wants to play it that way, then good times ahead. Perhaps David Warner could start the bowling match or something.
“I don’t know any Australian players, but it would be good if we could have a little word and sort something out!” Jones laughed.
Due to Hazlewood’s remarks, Australia’s lineup and performance in the match have come under scrutiny; this could indicate a more cohesive squad and a more dedicated approach.
