In the upcoming weeks, major European powers have stated that they may recognize an independent Palestinian state. What would that signify for Israel and the Palestinians?
How does Palestinian sovereignty stand today?
In 1988, the Palestine Liberation Organization proclaimed the creation of a Palestinian state, which was promptly acknowledged by the majority of the global south. A Palestinian state has been recognized by 147 of the 193 UN members as of right now, with Mexico being the most recent to do so in January 2025.
The United States, Israel’s principal ally, has long stated that it hopes to recognize a Palestinian state in the future, but only after discussing a “two-state solution” with the Palestinians.
