The White House is responding to criticism over President Donald Trump’s reported plan to build a massive triumphal arch in Washington, D.C. Some critics argue the structure would be too large and could block views of nearby monuments, but the administration insists the project would become a major landmark.
According to reports, Trump is considering a 250 foot “Independence Arch” inspired by Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. The proposed location is along the Potomac River, between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, as part of the celebration for America’s 250th birthday.
Report Says Arch Could Impact the Washington Skyline
A report claimed that the 250 foot design could interfere with sightlines of surrounding monuments. An expert quoted in the report suggested the arch would obstruct views and change the look of the National Mall area.
Art critic Catesby Leigh, who has supported a smaller version in the past, also expressed concern. He said a structure of that size does not belong in that location.
White House Fires Back at “Too Big” Complaints
White House communications director Steven Cheung dismissed the criticism in a social media post. He argued that the people calling it too big are simply used to smaller ideas.
White House spokesman David Ingle also defended the plan. He said the arch would become one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington and even globally. He added that Trump’s vision would leave a lasting mark for future generations.
Trump Wants the Largest Option
Trump did not confirm the exact measurements when asked by reporters aboard Air Force One. However, he made it clear he wants the biggest structure possible.
He said he wants the arch to be the largest of its kind because the United States is the most powerful nation. Reports also suggest Trump prefers the 250 foot design because it matches the “250 for 250” theme tied to the anniversary.
Proposed Arch Would Tower Over Nearby Landmarks
If the structure reaches 250 feet, it would be much taller than several nearby landmarks.
For comparison:
- The White House is about 70 feet tall
- The Lincoln Memorial is roughly 100 feet tall
This makes the proposed arch far larger than most major structures in the area.
Part of a Bigger Trump Era Building Push
The proposed Independence Arch is not the only large project being discussed. The Trump administration has also backed plans for a new White House ballroom and changes to the Rose Garden, including paving upgrades.
