LONDON: Shabana Mahmood, who is of Kashmiri and Pakistani descent, was appointed as the new Home Secretary by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This is the first time in UK history that a woman with Pakistani ancestry has held the influential job of head of the Home Office. The statement followed the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner due to the issue surrounding her apartment.
The Home Office is in charge of managing national security, immigration, and law enforcement. The influential role was previously held by Priti Patel, who is Indian, and Sajid Javed, who is Pakistani.
