KARACHI: The Ministry of Interior was given a week to retract its letter on the suspension of social media site X, which was formerly known as Twitter, by the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday.
SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi remarked, “What are you [interior ministry] achieving via shutting down trivial things […] The world must laugh at us,” during the hearing of several petitions submitted by Jibran Nasir, Zarrar Khuhro, and other parties.
The top judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan made these remarks at the same time that millions of Pakistanis use X, which has been unavailable since February because the government decided to restrict access to the social networking platform due to concerns about national security.
The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) informed the court last month that it had shut the social media site per the Ministry of erior and intelligence agencies.
The PTA said that the directions for temporary suspension of mobile internet data service, social media websites and applications are only issued by the said ministry after careful consideration of all the relevant reports and circumstances.
