Women Hit Fertility Tipping Point at 49 Even with Young Donor Eggs, New Study Finds

A new study suggests that women aged 49 and older have a significantly lower chance of having a successful pregnancy through IVF, even when using eggs donated by younger women. The findings challenge the long held belief that donor eggs can fully overcome the effects of age on fertility. Researchers examined the treatment outcomes of 1,774 women who underwent donor egg IVF. They found that fertility success gradually declined with age, while the risk of miscarriage increased sharply after the age of 49. Pregnancy Success Declines with Age According to the research, women between the ages of 35 and 40 had about a 54% chance of becoming pregnant through donor egg IVF. For women aged 49 and older, that figure dropped to around 43%. The study also showed that live birth rates fell from 46% in younger participants to 32% in women aged 49 and above. At the same time, miscarriage rates increased from 24% to 38%, highlighting the growing impact of reproductive ageing. Researchers reported that women who transferred all of their available embryos still achieved meaningful success. Around 80% of women aged 35 to 40 eventually had a live birth, compared with 62.5% of women aged 49 or older. Changes in the Womb May Play a Key Role The researchers believe that ageing affects more than egg quality. They found changes in the endometrium, the lining of the womb where an embryo implants and develops. Although the thickness of the womb lining remained similar across age groups, its overall condition declined as women got older. Scientists believe these changes may reduce the chances of implantation and increase the risk of pregnancy loss. Experts say future research could help identify ways to measure, improve, or even reverse age related changes in the womb. Experts Say Older Women Should Still Have Hope Lead researcher Dr. Beatrice Crestani explained that fertility has traditionally been linked mainly to egg quality. However, the latest findings show that the uterus also plays an important role in reproductive ageing. She stressed that women should not be discouraged from pursuing donor egg treatment because many still achieve successful pregnancies. However, doctors should clearly explain that donor eggs cannot completely remove the effects of ageing, especially after the age of 49. Sharon Marshall Shares Her IVF Journey Television personality Sharon Marshall also shared her personal experience with IVF. After six years of fertility treatment and several emotional setbacks, she gave birth to her daughter, Betsey, at the age of 46. Marshall revealed that she experienced two pregnancy losses before finally succeeding on her seventh IVF cycle. She described the process as physically exhausting and emotionally overwhelming, adding that she never truly relaxed during her pregnancy until her daughter was safely born. She believes women deserve honest information about the challenges of becoming pregnant later in life so they can make informed decisions about their fertility options. Study Highlights Importance of Realistic Expectations The findings show that donor eggs can improve pregnancy chances for older women, but they cannot completely eliminate the effects of ageing on the reproductive system. Experts say better understanding of womb health could lead to improved fertility treatments in the future. For now, doctors encourage women to seek professional advice early, understand the potential risks, and make fertility decisions based on accurate medical information.

Previous Article A murder investigation is underway after a mother and her two children were found dead inside a home in Great Denham, a residential area near Bedford. Police discovered the victims after forcing entry into the property when relatives and neighbours became concerned because the family had not been seen for several days. The tragic discovery has shocked the local community. Detectives are now working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths while carrying out a detailed investigation. Police Respond After Family Goes Missing Officers attended a property on Carnoustie Drive on Monday following reports that the family had not been seen for several days. After entering the home, police found the bodies of a woman and her two children. Emergency services secured the area while specialist investigators began gathering evidence. Forensic teams continue to examine the property as detectives interview witnesses and collect information that could help the investigation. Police Identify Suspect Investigators have confirmed that they identified a suspect who was known to all three victims. Early findings suggest the suspect has already left the country. Police officers are working with national and international agencies to trace the individual and determine their current location. Authorities have not released the suspect's identity because the investigation remains active. Investigation Continues Assistant Chief Constable John Murphy described the case as deeply distressing and confirmed that investigators believe the mother and her two children were murdered. He said the investigation remains in its early stages and requires significant resources. Detectives are examining evidence, reviewing information, and following every possible lead to establish what happened and identify everyone involved. Next Article E-Bike Injury Payouts Top £110 Million as Safety Concerns Grow Compensation Claims Continue to Rise Compensation paid to people injured by e-bikes and e-scooters across the UK has now exceeded £110 million, highlighting the growing financial and safety impact of micromobility vehicles. The sharp increase in claims has also contributed to higher motor insurance premiums, with experts saying insurers ultimately pass these costs on to drivers. The total has grown significantly in just seven years since the first compensation claim involving these vehicles was recorded. One of the largest individual settlements reached £20 million, reflecting the severity of some accidents. Coventry Crash Highlights the Risks One recent case involved a woman from Coventry who suffered serious injuries after being struck by a privately owned e-scooter while using a pedestrian crossing. She fractured her pelvis, wrist, and finger, while also suffering cuts and bruises. She recalled that everything changed within seconds during what had started as a pleasant day. The collision left her in severe pain and facing a long recovery. Security camera footage showed the rider crashing directly into the pedestrians before leaving the scene. The rider later received a 15 month prison sentence after police arrested him. Authorities also destroyed the e-scooter involved in the incident. Insurance Costs Continue to Increase The organisation responsible for handling compensation claims involving uninsured or untraced vehicles has warned that stronger regulation is needed for certain micromobility vehicles. It believes some models should face tighter sales controls, while others may require outright bans to improve public safety. Industry experts say rising compensation payments have become one of several factors increasing insurance costs for motorists across the country. Growing Concerns Over Micromobility Vehicles E-bikes, e-scooters, mobility scooters, and electric unicycles have become increasingly common in towns and cities. While many people use them for convenient travel, safety experts warn that irresponsible riding continues to create risks for pedestrians and other road users. Accidents involving these vehicles have raised concerns about enforcement, rider behaviour, and public awareness of existing laws. Private E-Scooters Remain Illegal on Public Roads Current regulations only allow rental e-scooters operating under approved government trial schemes to be used legally on public roads in selected areas. Privately owned e-scooters remain restricted to private property with the landowner's permission. Police regularly seize illegal e-scooters and modified e-bikes during enforcement operations. Authorities also remove electric bikes that have been altered to exceed the legal assisted speed limit of 15.5 mph, as these vehicles no longer comply with road regulations. Calls for Stronger Safety Measures As compensation claims continue to increase, safety organisations are urging policymakers to introduce stricter regulations for micromobility vehicles. Supporters believe better enforcement, clearer legislation, and improved rider education could reduce accidents while protecting both pedestrians and road users. With injury payouts now surpassing £110 million, pressure is mounting for stronger action to improve road safety and limit the financial burden on insurance customers.
