The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has debunked viral social media claims suggesting that the bright green glow seen in the Arabian Sea near Karachi is caused by pollution. According to the organisation, the glowing patches are a completely natural and harmless phenomenon.
Experts explain that the vivid green light comes from Noctiluca scintillans, a bioluminescent species that lights up the water when it blooms. These blooms occur every year and become especially visible when sea temperatures shift. WWF noted that the same phenomenon has been recorded several times since 2012, including a major occurrence in 2017.
The organisation stressed that Noctiluca scintillans is not toxic, does not harm marine life, and should not be confused with chemical waste or industrial discharge. WWF urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and to recognise this glow as a recurring natural spectacle along Karachi’s coastline.
