Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI has purchased a third building to increase its compute capacity. The company aims to reach nearly 2 gigawatts of training power.
The expansion highlights xAI’s goal to compete more directly with AI leaders such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Its supercomputer cluster, Colossus, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is already one of the largest in the world.
Details of the New Facility
Musk announced the purchase on X, calling the building MACROHARDRR. He did not reveal the exact location. The name may reference Microsoft.
According to The Information, the new data center will sit outside Memphis. xAI plans to convert the warehouse into a functional data center in 2026.
Massive Supercomputer Expansion
xAI intends to expand Colossus to house at least 1 million graphics processing units. The new data center, along with Colossus 2, is close to a natural gas power plant that xAI is constructing, along with other energy sources.
These facilities will significantly increase xAI’s AI training capabilities and support the development of more advanced models.
Environmental Concerns
However, environmental activists have criticized the expansion. Large data centers consume massive amounts of energy.
xAI has not yet responded to requests for comment on these concerns.
