LAHORE: Dr Yasmin Rashid, senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will be the party’s candidate for the Punjab Senate seat in the upcoming upper house elections on April 2, The News reported on Thursday.

PTI leader Mian Aslam Iqbal made the announcement on social networking platform X, formerly Twitter, revealing Rashid as the party’s candidate for the women’s seat.

Iqbal further stated that the PTI will field Zulfi Bukhari and Hamid Khan for general seats, while Brigadier (retd) Musadiq will run for a technocrat seat.

The development comes after the senior politician’s previous bid to obtain a place in the National Assembly failed when she lost to Pakistan Muslim.

Rashid, like several other PTI leaders, has faced legal hurdles after being charged in charges related to the violent episodes of the May 9 riots last year, during which military sites were assaulted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan in a fraud case.

On March 11, the existing senators’ six-year terms expired, leaving 52 seats in the upper house of parliament vacant.

The elections, however, would be held to elect 48 senators, as the four reserved seats for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) were eliminated with the 25th Constitutional Amendment.
