ISLAMABAD: Yusuf Raza Gilani, a former prime minister, was nominated by the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) on Thursday to fill the coveted position of Senate chairman.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s political secretary, Jamil Soomro, has sent out a notification in this regard.
In accordance with a deal reached between the PPP and the PML-N, the PPP was awarded the positions of president, Senate chairman, and governor of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the PML-N was awarded the positions of Senate deputy chairman, speaker of the National Assembly, and governor of Sindh and Balochistan.
As of right now, Gilani has the backing of twenty-four senators from the PPP, nineteen from the PML-N, four from the BAP, three from the ANP, three independents, and one from the National Party.
The total will be 62 if he receives the backing of three MQM-P and five JUI-F senators, indicating that the nominee of the ruling coalition will have an easy time winning the poll.
However, the PTI has the backing of twenty senators, plus one from each of the BNP and PML-Q, for a total of twenty-two.
