—aNew York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has announced an all-women transition team to guide him into office — a move that underlines his promise to create a City Hall that truly serves all New Yorkers.
Just a day after his historic election, the 34-year-old mayor-elect unveiled a group of seasoned leaders drawn from across city and federal government, non-profit sectors, and civic institutions. According to Time Magazine, the team includes women who have previously served in the administrations of Eric Adams, Bill de Blasio, and Michael Bloomberg, bringing decades of combined experience in public policy and city governance.
Standing beneath the Unisphere in Queens, Mamdani said, “I and my team will build a City Hall capable of delivering on the promises of this campaign. We will work every day to honor the trust New Yorkers have placed in us.”
—allLeading the transition will be Elana Leopold, a progressive strategist and former aide to de Blasio, serving as executive director. She’ll be joined by co-chairs Maria Torres-Springer, Lina Khan, Grace Bonilla, and Melanie Hartzog — all respected figures in urban planning, public administration, and social policy.
While Mamdani has not yet announced new top-level appointments, he reaffirmed plans to keep Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, first appointed by Mayor Adams. Tisch has yet to confirm her decision.
—aThe transition team’s primary role will be to ensure a smooth handover before Mamdani’s inauguration in January, after which he will oversee nearly 300,000 city employees and manage a $100 billion budget — a major challenge for a first-time mayor.
Addressing reporters, Mamdani described the moment as “the beginning of a commitment to solving old problems with new solutions.” Quoting the late Governor Mario M. Cuomo, he added, “The poetry of campaigning may have ended last night, but the prose of governing has just begun.”
Mamdani’s victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo marked one of the most closely followed elections in decades. Over two million New Yorkers turned out to vote—the highest participation in more than 50 years—securing Mamdani’s win by a nine-point margin.
