Alexander Zverev of Germany defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in a fierce match to advance to the French Open semifinals for the fourth time in his career.
27-year-old fourth seed Zverev defeated 11th seed De Minaur 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
Zverev has not made it to the Roland Garros final in the previous three years, but he now has another opportunity.
Casper Ruud of Norway, the seventh seed, who defeated Zverev in the previous year’s semifinals, will be his opponent.
“I’m happy to be back in another semi-final; hopefully I can win one,” Zverev stated.
Due to Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal on Tuesday, Ruud, 25, advanced to the final four without participating.
The 37-year-old defending champion Djokovic withdrew due to a knee issue that hindered him during his valiant victory on Monday in the fourth round.
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will face second seed Jannik Sinner of Italy in the other semifinal match.
On Friday, when Zverev’s continuing legal battle about accusations of domestic violence reopens in Berlin, both semi-final matches will take place.
