Archaeologists have uncovered a 16th-century caravanserai in Harappa, offering new insights into the subcontinent’s historic travel and postal systems, the Punjab Archaeology Department announced.

the PunjabAccording to Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, Secretary of Punjab Archaeology and Museums Department, the site features designated resting areas for travelers and a water tank, reflecting a well-organized system for long-distance journeys.

artifacts,The excavation also revealed a variety of artefacts, including clay figurines, miniature toy carts, and bangle fragments, highlighting the cultural and daily life of the era.

Punjab’s government has allocated Rs800 million for archaeological work across four major historical sites in the province. Dr. Bhutta emphasized that the Harappa discovery will enrich understanding of Sher Shah Suri’s travel network and showcase the continuity of ancient civilization in the region.

Harappa, part of the Indus Valley Civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage site along with Mohenjo Daro, has long been recognized as a cradle of urban culture in the Indian subcontinent.

This discovery strengthens the narrative of Harappa as a hub of ancient commerce, communication, and civilization, connecting centuries of history.
