A tragic incident shook the German city of Leipzig on Monday afternoon when a car drove into a crowd in a busy central area. Authorities confirmed that two people lost their lives, while many others suffered injuries.
What Happened in Leipzig
According to officials, the vehicle struck pedestrians near Grimmaische Straße, a well-known shopping street in the city center. The driver fled the scene right after the crash, which caused panic among people nearby. Emergency services responded quickly and secured the area.
Police later confirmed that they arrested the suspect. They also stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Casualties and Emergency Response
City officials reported that 22 people were injured in the incident. Among them, two are in critical condition. Emergency teams, including around 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics, reached the scene within minutes.
Two helicopters assisted in the rescue operation, helping transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities also blocked off the affected area to allow emergency teams to work safely.
