Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. How the Buss Family Owned the Lakers I am appreciative to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. It was anticipated that the planned investor group for the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative would be led by Kushner’s American venture capital firm, Thrive Eternal. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

She met Brian Hickerson, her new lover, just before Nashville's production concluded. Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

US Charges Former Cuban Leader

The United States has charged former Cuban President Raúl Castro in connection with the 1996 downing of two aircraft linked to the Cuban American group Brothers to the Rescue. The incident killed four people and caused major tensions between Washington and Havana.

According to US prosecutors, Castro and five others were involved in a conspiracy that led to the destruction of the planes traveling between Cuba and Florida. The charges include conspiracy to kill American citizens and murder offenses that could result in life imprisonment or the death penalty.

At the time of the incident, Castro served as Cuba’s defense chief and commanded the country’s armed forces. He later became president and stepped down in 2018.

China Defends Cuba and Criticizes Washington

China strongly reacted to the American charges and called on the US to stop using pressure tactics against Cuba. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing firmly supports Cuba’s sovereignty and opposes foreign interference.

Guo stated that the United States should stop using sanctions, legal actions, and threats to pressure Havana. He also warned Washington against using forceful rhetoric toward the Caribbean nation.

China has remained one of Cuba’s closest international allies for years. Beijing continues to oppose American sanctions and economic restrictions imposed on the communist island.

Cuba Calls Charges Politically Motivated

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel rejected the charges against Castro and described the case as politically motivated. Cuban officials argued that the accusations have no legal basis and accused Washington of increasing tensions for political purposes.

The plane incident from 1996 remains one of the most controversial moments in US Cuba relations. The aircraft belonged to Brothers to the Rescue, a group known for supporting Cuban exiles and opposing the Cuban government.

The case continues to spark strong reactions among Cuban Americans living in the United States.

Trump Administration Expands Sanctions on Cuba

US President Donald Trump has recently increased pressure on Cuba through new sanctions and economic restrictions. The White House imposed measures targeting Cuba’s energy, defense, security, and financial sectors.

The restrictions have added to Cuba’s economic struggles, including fuel shortages, electricity blackouts, and rising food prices across the country.

Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order sanctioning Cuban officials accused of corruption, human rights abuses, and misuse of public resources.

Trump has also suggested that Cuba’s communist government is becoming weaker as Washington tightens pressure on Havana.

Previous Article Air France and Airbus Found Guilty Over Deadly 2009 AF447 Crash Court Reverses Earlier Decision in AF447 Tragedy A French appeals court has found Air France and Airbus guilty of corporate manslaughter in connection with the 2009 crash of Air France Flight AF447. The disaster killed all 228 people on board and remains the deadliest aviation accident in French history. The Airbus A330 was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on 1 June 2009 when it disappeared from radar during severe weather over the Atlantic Ocean. Investigators later confirmed that the aircraft stalled mid flight before plunging into the sea from an altitude of 38,000 feet. Appeals Court Holds Both Companies Responsible The latest ruling overturns a previous court decision made in April 2023 that had cleared both companies of criminal responsibility. After reviewing the case again, the Paris Appeals Court concluded that failures linked to pilot training and aircraft systems contributed to the tragedy. The court ordered both companies to pay the maximum fine of €225,000 each. However, many victims’ families believe the penalties are too small compared to the scale of the disaster and the lives lost. Despite the fines, legal experts say the verdict could seriously damage the reputations of both companies in the aviation industry. Long Search Operation Followed the Crash The crash triggered one of the most difficult recovery missions in aviation history. Search teams spent months scanning more than 10,000 square kilometers of the Atlantic Ocean floor before locating the wreckage. Investigators finally recovered the aircraft’s black boxes in 2011 after deep sea search operations. The recordings helped experts understand the final moments of the flight and revealed how the aircraft lost control during the storm. Brazilian rescue teams and French authorities worked together during the recovery effort. In the first few weeks, crews recovered 51 bodies from the ocean, many passengers still strapped into their seats. Families Continue Seeking Justice Relatives of the victims attended the court hearing as the verdict was announced. Many families have spent years demanding accountability from the airline and aircraft manufacturer. Among the passengers was Brazilian engineer Nelson Marinho Filho, who reportedly boarded the flight at the last moment before departure from Galeão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro. His family later said they waited more than two years to bury his remains after recovery teams identified his body. Both Air France and Airbus continue to deny wrongdoing and may file further appeals against the ruling. Air France and Airbus Found Guilty Over Deadly 2009 AF447 Crash
