Chinese businessman Guo Wengui, who was once considered one of China’s wealthiest property developers, has been sentenced to 30 years in a United States prison after being found guilty of running a massive billion dollar fraud scheme.
The court ruled that Guo deceived thousands of supporters and investors by promising financial opportunities and political causes. Instead, prosecutors said he used much of the money to support his luxurious lifestyle.
Court Says Investors Were Misled
The sentence was handed down by a federal court in New York after Guo was convicted of racketeering, fraud, and money laundering.
According to the court, Guo targeted people who wanted to support democratic change in China. Many trusted his public image and invested money in projects that later turned out to be fraudulent.
Billion Dollar Investment Scheme
Investigators said Guo collected more than $1 billion from supporters between 2018 and 2023 through investment programs and cryptocurrency projects.
Guo Denied the Allegations
Throughout the case, Guo maintained his innocence. He argued that the money helped finance his political activism against China’s ruling Communist Party.
Before moving to the United States in 2017, Guo had built a successful property business in China and maintained strong connections with senior government officials.
However, after Chinese authorities accused him of corruption, he left the country and later sought asylum in the United States.
Built a Strong Online Following
After arriving in America, Guo became a well known critic of the Chinese government. His online videos and political messages attracted thousands of supporters, especially among Chinese communities living overseas.
Prosecutors Welcome the Verdict
Following the sentencing, US prosecutors said the lengthy prison term reflects the seriousness of the crimes.
Officials added that wealth and public influence do not protect anyone from being held accountable for financial crimes.
The case marks one of the largest fraud convictions involving a high profile Chinese businessman in the United States.
