Italy has delivered a major court ruling in one of the country’s deadliest infrastructure disasters. A court in Genoa sentenced former motorway operator chief Giovanni Castellucci to 12 years in prison for his role in the 2018 Morandi bridge collapse, which killed 43 people.

The decision came after a lengthy legal process that lasted several years. Although prosecutors requested a much longer sentence, the court found Castellucci guilty and handed him a 12 year prison term.

Court Hands Down Verdicts After Years of Investigation

The Morandi bridge collapsed during heavy rain on August 14, 2018. The bridge gave way while vehicles were crossing it, sending cars and trucks crashing to the ground below. The tragedy shocked Italy and raised serious concerns about the safety of the country’s ageing infrastructure.

Following almost four years of investigation and another four years of court proceedings, judges announced verdicts for all 57 defendants involved in the case.

The court convicted 32 people. The remaining 25 defendants were either acquitted or cleared because some charges had expired under Italy’s statute of limitations.

Former Motorway Officials Receive Prison Sentences

Giovanni Castellucci, the former chief executive of Autostrade per l’Italia, received the longest sentence of 12 years. He did not attend the hearing. His lawyer said they would challenge the ruling and continue to fight for his acquittal during the appeal process.

Former motorway executive Michele Donferri Mitelli received an 11 year prison sentence.

Paolo Berti, who served as the company’s deputy executive, received a prison sentence of five and a half years. The court also sentenced several other engineers and government officials for their roles in the disaster.

Among them, former Spea chief executive Antonino Galatà received five and a half years in prison. Mauro Coletta, a former transport ministry official responsible for motorway oversight, received a five year sentence.

Families Welcome the Court’s Decision

Many relatives of the victims attended the hearing and embraced each other after the verdicts were announced.

Emmanuel Diaz, who lost his brother in the collapse, said he felt satisfied with the court’s decision.

Egle Possetti, whose sister, brother in law, and two children died in the disaster, described Castellucci’s sentence as acceptable. She said the ruling marked an important step toward justice for the victims’ families and offered hope after years of waiting.

Prosecutors and Defence Offered Different Explanations

Prosecutors argued that officials repeatedly delayed essential maintenance work and ignored warning signs about the bridge’s condition. They believed these failures directly contributed to the collapse.

Defence lawyers rejected those claims. They argued that the disaster resulted from flaws in the bridge’s original design, including a cable enclosed in concrete that made inspections more difficult.

All of the defendants denied wrongdoing throughout the trial.

A Landmark Case for Italy

The Morandi bridge, designed by engineer Riccardo Morandi and opened in 1967, became the focus of one of Italy’s largest criminal investigations involving public infrastructure.

Prosecutors initially sought a combined total of 400 years in prison for all 57 defendants on charges including manslaughter and failure to properly maintain the bridge.

The latest ruling represents a significant milestone in the long search for accountability following one of Italy’s most devastating bridge disasters.

Previous Article Canada Wildfires Trigger Air Quality Alerts Across the United States More than 800 wildfires continue to burn across Canada, sending thick smoke across the border and causing dangerous air quality in several parts of the United States. Officials have issued health alerts as smoke affects millions of people from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast. Over 800 Wildfires Continue to Burn Canada is currently battling 857 active wildfires, including more than 20 new fires reported in a single day. Most of these fires remain out of control, making it difficult for firefighters to slow their spread. Large wildfire clusters in northwestern Ontario continue to produce massive smoke clouds. These smoke plumes are drifting across nearby provinces and into several US states. Smoke Causes Dangerous Air Quality Smoke from the fires has created hazardous air quality across northern Michigan and Minnesota. Health officials advise residents to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and avoid outdoor activities whenever possible. Air quality alerts also cover parts of the Great Lakes region, the Upper Midwest, and the northeastern United States. In western New York, air pollution has reached a "very unhealthy" level. Meanwhile, the New York City metropolitan area is experiencing "unhealthy" air conditions. Residents have reported hazy skies along with deep orange and red sunrises and sunsets as wildfire smoke spreads through the atmosphere. New York Activates Emergency Measures New York City has expanded its emergency response by opening cooling centers and distributing KN95 face masks. Local officials encourage people, especially children, older adults, and those with breathing conditions, to reduce outdoor exposure until air quality improves. Rain May Bring Only Limited Relief Thunderstorms are expected across parts of Ontario during the next few days. However, weather experts believe the rainfall will likely provide only limited help because many fires continue to burn over large areas. Strong northwesterly winds are expected to push smoke into northern US states through the weekend. As a result, smoke may also reach New Jersey, where large public events are scheduled. Meteorologists expect wind patterns to shift early next week. If that happens, more smoke will move toward Quebec, allowing air quality to improve across many southern US regions. Detroit Records the World's Worst Air Quality According to global air quality monitoring data, Detroit currently has the poorest air quality in the world. Minneapolis and Toronto also rank among the cities experiencing the highest levels of air pollution because of wildfire smoke. Political Leaders Respond Several lawmakers from Michigan have urged the Canadian government to strengthen wildfire prevention and forest management efforts. They expressed concern that smoke has affected their state for three consecutive wildfire seasons. At the same time, US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra praised the long standing cooperation between both countries. He said the United States and Canada will continue working together to respond to cross border wildfire emergencies. Ongoing Health Concerns Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles that can enter the lungs and worsen breathing problems. Health experts recommend limiting outdoor activities, using air purifiers when available, and wearing high quality masks if outdoor travel becomes necessary. Officials continue to monitor wildfire activity closely as emergency crews work to contain the fires and protect affected communities. Next Article Zelensky Replaces Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, Sparks Protests Across Ukraine Ukraine entered a new political crisis after President Volodymyr Zelensky decided to replace Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The unexpected decision sparked protests in Kyiv and several other cities, with many Ukrainians expressing support for the outgoing minister. Public Demonstrations Follow Surprise Decision Hundreds of people, most of them young protesters, gathered in the streets carrying banners that read "Hands Off Fedorov" and "Stop Sabotaging Victory." Demonstrators also chanted slogans against the government's decision, arguing that changing the defence leadership could weaken the country's war effort. The protests reflected growing public concern over the future direction of Ukraine's military leadership during its ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky Names New Acting Defence Minister President Zelensky nominated Major General Yevhenii Khmara to serve as acting defence minister. According to the president, Khmara has developed significant experience in modern battlefield technology and military operations, making him a strong candidate for the role. The appointment still requires further political approval as discussions continue within Ukraine's leadership. Leadership Dispute Behind the Reshuffle The leadership change followed reports of growing disagreements between Fedorov and Ukraine's Commander in Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov later confirmed that he had advised President Zelensky to replace both Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov. However, the president chose to keep the current military leadership in place. Zelensky admitted that tensions between the Defence Ministry and the General Staff had existed for a long time. He said he personally worked to ease the disagreements and encourage cooperation between both sides. Fedorov Says His Reform Plans Were Blocked Speaking after his dismissal, Fedorov explained that he had agreed to continue working with Syrskyi after Zelensky decided not to replace the commander. However, he claimed many of his proposed military reforms never moved forward because they faced repeated resistance. Fedorov also criticised Syrskyi, saying Ukraine should focus on finding innovative ways to counter Russia instead of allowing internal disagreements to slow progress. Syrskyi responded briefly on social media. He said he remained proud of Ukraine's defence during the battle for Kyiv in 2022 and would continue concentrating on military strategy while wishing Fedorov success in the future. Fedorov's Short But Influential Tenure Although Fedorov served as defence minister for only a few months after taking office in January, many observers credited him with bringing fresh energy to the ministry. He launched anti corruption reforms, promoted greater transparency, and introduced data driven methods to evaluate military performance on the battlefield. Supporters believe these efforts improved decision making within the defence sector. Wider Government Reshuffle Continues The changes extend beyond the Defence Ministry. Parliament approved the appointment of Serhiy Koretsky as Ukraine's new prime minister following the resignation of Yuliia Svyrydenko. Meanwhile, lawmakers continue discussing candidates for the permanent defence minister position, with Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko among the names under consideration. Ukraine's latest political reshuffle highlights growing debates over military leadership as the country continues defending itself against Russia's ongoing invasion.
