Ukraine entered a new political crisis after President Volodymyr Zelensky decided to replace Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The unexpected decision sparked protests in Kyiv and several other cities, with many Ukrainians expressing support for the outgoing minister.
Public Demonstrations Follow Surprise Decision
Hundreds of people, most of them young protesters, gathered in the streets carrying banners that read “Hands Off Fedorov” and “Stop Sabotaging Victory.” Demonstrators also chanted slogans against the government’s decision, arguing that changing the defence leadership could weaken the country’s war effort.
The protests reflected growing public concern over the future direction of Ukraine’s military leadership during its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky Names New Acting Defence Minister
President Zelensky nominated Major General Yevhenii Khmara to serve as acting defence minister. According to the president, Khmara has developed significant experience in modern battlefield technology and military operations, making him a strong candidate for the role.
The appointment still requires further political approval as discussions continue within Ukraine’s leadership.
Leadership Dispute Behind the Reshuffle
The leadership change followed reports of growing disagreements between Fedorov and Ukraine’s Commander in Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Fedorov later confirmed that he had advised President Zelensky to replace both Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov. However, the president chose to keep the current military leadership in place.
Zelensky admitted that tensions between the Defence Ministry and the General Staff had existed for a long time. He said he personally worked to ease the disagreements and encourage cooperation between both sides.
Fedorov Says His Reform Plans Were Blocked
Speaking after his dismissal, Fedorov explained that he had agreed to continue working with Syrskyi after Zelensky decided not to replace the commander. However, he claimed many of his proposed military reforms never moved forward because they faced repeated resistance.
Fedorov also criticised Syrskyi, saying Ukraine should focus on finding innovative ways to counter Russia instead of allowing internal disagreements to slow progress.
Syrskyi responded briefly on social media. He said he remained proud of Ukraine’s defence during the battle for Kyiv in 2022 and would continue concentrating on military strategy while wishing Fedorov success in the future.
Fedorov’s Short But Influential Tenure
Although Fedorov served as defence minister for only a few months after taking office in January, many observers credited him with bringing fresh energy to the ministry.
He launched anti corruption reforms, promoted greater transparency, and introduced data driven methods to evaluate military performance on the battlefield. Supporters believe these efforts improved decision making within the defence sector.
Wider Government Reshuffle Continues
The changes extend beyond the Defence Ministry. Parliament approved the appointment of Serhiy Koretsky as Ukraine’s new prime minister following the resignation of Yuliia Svyrydenko.
Meanwhile, lawmakers continue discussing candidates for the permanent defence minister position, with Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko among the names under consideration.
Ukraine’s latest political reshuffle highlights growing debates over military leadership as the country continues defending itself against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
