Rhine River Reaches Record Low
As extended heatwaves persist throughout Europe, the Rhine River has dropped to record low levels in a number of places in Germany and the Netherlands.
Levels at Cologne, western Germany, and Lobith, where the Rhine flows from Germany into the Netherlands, were lower last week than they have been since records first started.
The Danube, which runs through ten nations, and the Po River in Italy are two other significant European rivers with crucial transportation, industrial, and agricultural roles that have also experienced record low levels.
According to the EU’s Drought Observatories, drought conditions worsened in central-western Europe in mid-July while remaining steady and critical over rest of Europe.
Europe Heatwave Worsens River Crisis
Many nations in central and southern Europe are expected to see temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius for at least another week owing to renewed heatwave conditions.
At the end of July, 78% of Danube measurement stations and 44% of Rhine measuring stations reported exceptionally low water levels, according to Germany’s Low Water Information System (NIWIS).
One of the busiest rivers in Europe is the Rhine, which originates in the Swiss Alps and drains into the North Sea.
Concerns over the financial consequences of having to restrict ships and navigation have been raised by declining water levels.
Rhine Shipping Faces New Risks
The navigable water depth at the chokepoint of Kaub, close to Koblenz, fell to a record low of 25 cm on Friday before somewhat rising on Monday.
Because it gauges how heavy cargo ships may be laden, the Kaub gauging station in western Germany is a crucial indication of the Rhine’s navigability. There, low water levels can significantly limit inland shipping.
Although a complete suspension of commerce on the Rhine was improbable, preparations would need to be made.
The distributing cargo across more vessels to make them lighter, according to Martin Wolters of the Rhine Waterways and commerce Authority, who spoke with German outlet WDR.
According to Wolters, this may eventually lead to increased transportation expenses and supply bottlenecks.
