Why it matters The situation could affect election administration, voter confidence, and public trust in the voting process.

US Election Officials Prepare for Midterms

State and local election officials across the United States are preparing for a difficult election season.

Reuters interviewed more than 50 election officials from both major political parties. The officials included 12 state secretaries of state.

Many officials said they now expect challenges involving misinformation, cyber security and political interference.

California officials have discussed how they would respond if federal agents appeared at polling locations. Michigan officials have also advised local clerks about possible federal requests for voting machine access.

Election Officials Seek Legal Protection

Some state and local officials are hiring outside lawyers. Others are seeking legal training for election staff.

Officials want to understand how they should respond if federal agencies request sensitive election records or voting equipment.

Under the U.S. Constitution, states and local governments manage elections. The president does not directly control the administration of state elections.

Trump has called for greater federal involvement in voting. His administration has also pursued investigations linked to election records and voting issues, according to Reuters.

Misinformation Remains a Major Concern

Election officials are also preparing for false or misleading claims about voting.

More than a dozen officials told Reuters they are expanding public information campaigns. These efforts aim to give voters accurate information about election procedures.

Election Security Faces New Challenges

Cyber security remains another major concern.

Election offices have spent years improving protection against cyber attacks and other security threats. Officials now say some federal program cuts have created additional challenges.

Several offices are also improving physical security. Measures include better camera systems and stronger barriers around election facilities.

These changes reflect concerns that grew after the 2020 presidential election.

2026 Midterms Could Shift US Power

The 2026 midterm elections will decide seats in Congress and could change the balance of political power in Washington.

Election administration remains largely under state and local control. However, disputes over voting rules, election records and federal authority have increased political tensions.

Trump has also supported efforts to change congressional district maps before the midterms. The redistricting fight could influence the competition for control of the House of Representatives.

Election Trust Faces Growing Political Pressure

Public confidence plays an important role in any election.

If voters question election systems without reliable evidence, officials may face greater pressure and public distrust.

Election workers also face practical challenges. They must protect voting systems while responding to legal requests, political disputes and online misinformation.

The coming months could therefore bring more legal and political battles over how elections should operate.

US Election Officials Prepare for 2026 Midterms

Election officials are expected to continue reviewing their security plans before voters head to the polls.

State and local governments may also face new legal disputes over voting records, federal authority and election procedures.

Officials will continue working to protect voting systems and provide voters with reliable information.

Their focus includes election security, misinformation, cyber threats and protecting the independence of local election administration. The preparations show how seriously officials are treating concerns about the upcoming vote.
