Trump Says US and Iran Held Talks

Trump told reporters that U.S. and Iranian officials met for about three hours. He did not provide many details about what the two sides discussed.

The meeting followed Trump’s address to the U.N. General Assembly. His speech focused heavily on the conflict with Iran and the possibility of further escalation.

The reported talks add another diplomatic development to a week dominated by the Iran conflict. Iranian officials have also expressed concerns about the direction of U.S. policy and previous negotiations.

Andy Burnham Calls for Global AI Rules

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first U.N. General Assembly speech to call for international standards on artificial intelligence.

Burnham said governments should establish rules for transparency and access to AI systems. He also warned that AI could create new security and economic risks.

The British government plans to place AI at the center of its G20 agenda next year. Burnham also announced plans for a National Centre for Information Defence to respond to hostile information campaigns.

Trump Meets Other World Leaders

Trump also held talks with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the U.N. meetings.

The discussions covered international security and relations between the countries. Burnham also used his meetings in New York to discuss Britain’s role in global security and technology policy.

Trump is also preparing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. The two countries continue to face disagreements over trade, technology and national security.

Debate Over Noncitizen Voting

The Trump administration has expanded efforts to identify and prosecute noncitizens who allegedly appear on voter rolls or take part in elections.

Homeland Security Investigations official Matthew Millhollin said the effort has identified about 1,600 cases and resulted in roughly 160 arrests.

Those figures are much smaller than earlier claims about the possible scale of noncitizen voting. Researchers have also said that illegal noncitizen voting remains uncommon in U.S. elections.

The issue is likely to remain part of the political debate ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Trump Reports Three Hour Iran Talks

The latest U.N. meetings have brought several major international issues into focus. Trump says U.S. and Iranian officials held three hours of talks after his warning at the General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Britain is pushing for international AI standards, while Washington and Beijing prepare for another high level meeting. The developments show how diplomacy, technology, security and economic competition are shaping the current global agenda.
