Have you ever wondered how plastic might be transformed into a stylish and capacious handbag? Or how the simple veggies and spices in your kitchen can work magic on blank fabrics, sparking them with bright colors? And how about transforming those old, neglected garments into eye-catching home décor pieces?

Geo Digital will take you to the Rana Liaquat Craftsman Colony (RLCC) in Karachi’s Shah Faisal Colony neighborhood, where women artists are perfecting the art of sustainability with style, transforming common materials into eco-friendly yet contemporary products.

The RLCC, located in the bustling Shah Faisal Colony, was created in 1954 by Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s acclaimed former First Lady. The RLCC has numerous divisions spanning from education to healthcare.

From throwaway bags to fashionable handbags
Afshan Waheed, an artisan and RLCC faculty member, is passionate about transforming plastic bags into practical and fashionable handbags. Afshan’s crochet designs bring new life to old materials. Her adventure began with a simple notion, which grew into something spectacular.

Crafting sustainability: Women artisans in Karachi are leading the way.
“We’ve all witnessed the mayhem caused by those annoying plastic bags clogging drains and sewer pipes. They are everywhere, hiding in our homes. I resolved to do something about it.
