With thousands of jobs in South Wales at risk due to plans to close both blast furnaces, Unite is taking action, but not quite a strike.
To cut expenses and pollutants, an electric arc furnace will take the place of the furnaces; nevertheless, unions have expressed concern that the plans could jeopardize 2,800 jobs.
About 1,500 Tata steelworkers who are stationed in Port Talbot and Llanwern, Newport, will begin working to rule on June 18, according to Unite.
They will also be involved in the overtime prohibition.
The union added that if members’ requests are not satisfied, it would not rule out going on strike.
A better future
Tata, according to Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham, “miscalculated”.
“Its workers know a better future is possible and they will be taking industrial action to fight for it, with Unite using every tool at its disposal to make the company change course,” she stated.
“This hugely wealthy company knows UK steel capacity and jobs can be retained as the transition is made to green steel.”
