ISLAMABAD: Omar Ayub, the secretary general of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), notified the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday that he was “busy” and could not appear before the body.

This development follows the launch of an inquiry by the FIA’s cybercrime branch into a tweet claimed to the former prime minister Imran Khan on X, formerly Twitter.

The article stated that “Every Pakistani should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

In the interest of justice, the board had invited him to appear before the FIA Cyber Crime Reporting Center on Wednesday, along with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and Information Secretary Raoof Hasan.

Ayub informed the FIA that he was preoccupied with a pre-budget engagement and attending court appearances since he was a nominee in multiple terrorism cases, even before Hasan and Gohar arrived at the office.

In his answer, Ayub described the show-cause letter as “defamatory” and said that “unlawful questions” were posed “without referring to any specific query.” This was sent through his legal team.

He went on to say that the notification caused “harassment, unwarranted intimidation, and injurious propaganda” because it was widely shared on mainstream and social media.
