The minister for Northern Ireland, Steve Baker, stated that he did not want to interfere with Rishi Sunak’s decision to step down following the election, but he did understand the difficulties the Conservative campaign is currently facing.
Speaking with Sophy Ridge on Politics Hub, Mr. Baker asserted that although his party would “love to win,” people would laugh if they saw him on here speculating about winning and then looked at the polls.
When asked if he had any personal aspirations to lead, Mr. Baker replied that he would like to be on the government.
When asked if he would rule out running for president, he responded, “I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Mr. Baker is one of several Tory candidates who are expected to challenge Mr. Sunak should the polls turn out to be accurate and he is thrown out of Downing Street.
The Conservative Party is currently engaged in a heated discussion over whether or not to accept Reform leader Nigel Farage into the fold. While Mr. Baker opposed this proposal, other candidates for leadership, such as former home secretary Suella Braverman, have embraced it.
