Fact Check’s research, which indicated a 46% increase in registered crimes throughout the province in 2023, was sharply contested by the Punjab police. However, as of yet, the provincial police have not offered any information, facts, or proof to back up the position taken by their agency.
The claims made by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who asserted a noteworthy 30% decrease in crime rates during his term as Punjab’s interim chief minister in 2023, were refuted in a report published by Fact Check on May 13.
The province was led by Naqvi from January 2023 to February 2024.
In sharp contrast to Naqvi’s claims, a factual investigation carried out by Geo Fact Check demonstrated that official police statistics showed that the number of registered cases of all crimes had increased by 46% in 2023 compared to 2022.
In reality, the province has seen a sharp rise in horrible crimes like acid attacks, gang rape, rape, and murder within the past year.
The Punjab police responded to the conclusions of the Geo Fact Check in a press release on May 15, disputing the report’s veracity while claiming that the fact check had missed a number of important details.
According to the press release, a policy allowing for the free registration of offenses was implemented in 2023. As a result, all previous cases and first information reports (FIRs) that were not able to be entered into the online system in 2022 were instead submitted in 2023.
