RAWALPINDI: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Tuesday that Lieutenant Colonel Akbar Hussain, a retired Pakistan Army officer, had been found guilty of “inciting sedition”.

The statement also stated that the former army commander was found guilty of inciting sedition among army soldiers while performing his or her duty by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) in accordance with the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.

On May 10, the court of competent authority found him “guilty” of the offense charged after following the proper legal procedures. The punishment was imposed: 14 years of hard labor in jail.

As a result of the penalty that was given, the officer’s rank was forfeited on July 26, 2024.Previous to this, the Official Secrets Act, 1923’s provisions regarding espionage and actions detrimental to the safety and interest of the state were violated, and ex-Major (retd) Adil Farooq Raja and ex-Captain (retd) Haider Raza Mehdi were also found guilty and sentenced through the FGCM. These charges included inciting sedition among army personnel from the performance of their duties.

On October 7 and 9, 2023, a court of competent jurisdiction found Raja and Mehdi guilty and rendered an adjudication. Following a proper legal process, the two were sentenced to 14 and 12 years of hard labor, respectively, and both lost their rank effective November 21, 2023.
