Whittaker knew he used his phone a lot, but he didn’t think it was an issue until he sat down and did the math. Whittaker lives in Nashville on a “suburban farm” with his wife, three kids, and dog.
Whittaker discovered that if he lived to be 85 years old, he would spend over ten years of his remaining life on his phone after receiving an alert that week showing that he had averaged seven hours and twenty-three minutes of daily use.

Whittaker used no screens to navigate his life until he set off on a seven-week tour across the United States in the summer of 2022.
