ISLAMABAD The government is trying to get a proposed constitutional change passed by parliament, but Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday vehemently opposed it, opposing both the hike in the retirement age and the extension of judges’ terms.
The government is rushing to appease members of different political parties because it is determined to move forward with measures that will impact the higher judiciary.
The goal of the proposed modifications is to raise the retirement age of superior judges by three years, which has led to controversy and a power struggle between the opposition and the government.
At the moment, Article 179 of the Constitution stipulates that a justice of the Supreme Court may continue to serve until the age of 65, while Article 195 establishes 62 as the retirement age for judges of higher courts.
