a news channel, captured footage of the boxer from Ukraine holding handcuffs.
His wife expressed her gratitude for his freedom and made it clear he wasn’t arrested in a blurry video she shared on Instagram, which showed him surrounded by officers in uniform.
Following what he described as a “misunderstanding,” Usyk, 37, was later freed; however, he provided no additional information regarding the reason behind his stop.
Posting a picture of Usyk with their general consul in Krakow, Mr. Zelenskyy said on X that he had launched an inquiry.
Later, foreign minister Andrii Sybiha acknowledged that he had spoken with the Polish ministry since the arrest was deemed “disproportionate and unacceptable” by Ukraine.
“We immediately responded to the detention of Oleksandr Usyk in Krakow and facilitated his release,” Sybiha wrote on X.
Currently holding the WBC, WBO, and WBA titles, Usyk is considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world and is unbeaten.
After defeating Tyson Fury of Britain in May, he became the first unchallenged champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000. Subsequently, he gave the IBF championship to Daniel Dubois of the UK, who will face Anthony Joshua on Saturday.
Many people in Ukraine view Usyk as a national hero and source of inspiration.
