In an operation aided by Police Scotland, National Crime Agency (NCA) officers apprehended 33-year-old Jay Emmanuel-Thomas in Gourock, Inverclyde, on Wednesday morning.
Emmanuel-Thomas is a Scottish Championship player presently with Greenock Morton.
Born in London, he began his playing career at Arsenal and then played for Livingston, QPR, Ipswich Town, Aberdeen, and Bristol City.
Emmanuel-Thomas was taken to Carlisle for interrogation after his arrest, and he has now been charged.
He faces charges of importing Class B narcotics and is scheduled to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court later on Thursday.
According to the NCA, two ladies were detained and charged after the drugs were found at the London airport on September 2.
According to the NCA, more than three times as much cannabis has been captured in 2024 thus far as there was in 2023.
The NCA continues to collaborate with partners like Border Force to target those involved in drug smuggling, including couriers and organizers, according to David Phillips, senior investigative officer for the NCA.
