ISLAMABAD: The leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, asserted on Thursday that “martial law would have been imposed in the country had the constitutional amendment bill been passed” as the coalition government and the opposition stepped up their parliamentary battle for the controversial judicial package.
Following the PTI’s request last month for the early issuance of a notification regarding the appointment of the next top judge, the government pushed the proposed constitutional package amid rumors of a possible extension in the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October of this year.
“[Federal Law Minister] Azam Nazeer Tarar and [PPP Chairman] Bilawal Bhutto know nothing about the draft amendments,” said.
