According to a senior US official, Syria and Israel are on the verge of reaching a “de-escalation” deal in which Israel will cease its assaults in exchange for Syria agreeing to refrain from moving any heavy machinery or equipment close to the Israeli border.
US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack told reporters outside UN General Assembly sessions in New York that the agreement would be the first step toward the security accord the two nations have been negotiating.
Israel and Syria are negotiating a deal that Damascus hopes will guarantee an end to Israeli airstrikes and the evacuation of Israeli forces that have advanced into southern Syria.
