Martin Scorsese has shared an emotional tribute to his late friend Rob Reiner and Reiner’s wife, Michele Singer. Writing in news, Scorsese expressed the deep sadness of now referring to them in the past tense.
He recalled meeting Reiner in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Scorsese described him as warm, humorous, and full of life, someone who never overwhelmed others. “He had a beautiful sense of freedom and a laugh that could light up any room,” Scorsese wrote.
Scorsese remembered Reiner’s laughter during a Lincoln Center tribute, which perfectly captured his joy and comic timing. He also praised Reiner’s work in films. Misery impressed him with Kathy Bates and James Caan’s performances, while This Is Spinal Tap was, in his words, “an immaculate creation.”
The director also reflected on casting Reiner as Leonardo DiCaprio’s father in The Wolf of Wall Street. He admitted that lines from the film still move him, including Reiner’s famous question: “You got all the money in the world. You need everybody else’s money?”
In closing, Scorsese called the deaths of Rob and Michele “a shocking void in reality.” Despite the grief, he finds comfort imagining his friend alive, laughing, and sharing stories once again.
“Someday, I’ll picture myself at a dinner or party next to Rob, hearing his laugh, enjoying his comic timing, and feeling lucky to call him a friend,” Scorsese wrote, ending his moving reflection.
