There was no shortage of headline crime stories in 2025. As the year went on, several cases showed how strange and unpredictable real life can be. In fact, these five trials captured attention across the country and kept people talking for months.
United States vs Luigi Mangione
This case shocked the nation. Luigi Mangione was arrested in December 2024 and accused of stalking and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The attack happened in broad daylight in Midtown Manhattan, so public interest grew very quickly.
Soon after, photos of Mangione spread online because of his young age and appearance. As a result, some people even showed public support. Mangione pleaded not guilty. Later, a judge dropped the terror related charge, although the murder charge still remains. He could still face life in prison if convicted. In May, the judge is expected to rule on what evidence can be used and, at the same time, set a trial date.
State of Pennsylvania vs Bryan Kohberger
This case began back in 2022 when Bryan Kohberger was charged with killing four University of Idaho students. After his arrest, he was extradited to Idaho, and his case continued to build national interest.
At first, a jury trial was planned for August 2025. However, Kohberger accepted a plea deal shortly before it began. To avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty. Because of that, he received four life sentences without parole, along with extra penalties for burglary. He is now serving his sentence at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.
United States vs Sean Combs
Another major story involved music producer Sean Diddy Combs. Federal prosecutors accused him of crimes linked to sex trafficking and related activity over many years. Eventually, a jury found him guilty of transporting a person for prostitution. His former partner, Cassie Ventura, was one of the main witnesses.
After the trial, Combs received a little more than four years in federal prison, and he received credit for time already served. He is currently held in New Jersey. Meanwhile, his release date is listed as June 4, 2028.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs Karen Read
This case drew massive debate and media coverage. Karen Read was accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, in 2022. Her first trial ended in a mistrial. Then, in June 2025, she was found not guilty of second degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene.
Even so, she was found guilty of operating under the influence and received probation. Since then, Read has filed a lawsuit against several officials, saying she was wrongly targeted and that there was misconduct. The case has now moved into federal court, and both sides continue to argue their positions.
People of the State of Colorado vs James Craig
Colorado dentist James Craig was convicted in July 2025 of poisoning his wife. Prosecutors said he mixed poison into her protein drinks. Furthermore, they pointed to financial stress and an affair as the likely motive.
In addition, Craig was convicted of witness tampering, perjury, and trying to arrange a murder while in custody. As a result, he received life in prison without parole plus 33 extra years. He is currently held at a state correctional facility in Colorado.
