Meta has announced plans to trial premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp in the coming months. The move marks the company’s latest effort to expand paid services while keeping its core platforms free for all users.
AI Features to Drive Paid Plans
One of the key attractions of Meta’s premium plans will be access to advanced AI tools. This includes features from Vibes, a video generation app that allows users to create visuals using artificial intelligence. Meta introduced Vibes in September as part of an update to its Meta AI app.
The company believes these tools can help users turn ideas into engaging content more easily. The subscription plans are expected to target creators, professionals, and users who want more control and creative options.
Manus Acquisition Plays a Key Role
Meta also plans to integrate technology from Manus, an AI company originally founded in China and now based in Singapore. Meta agreed to acquire Manus in December for a reported two billion dollars.
Manus is known for developing autonomous AI agents. These agents can plan, execute, and complete tasks with little user input. Examples include organizing trips, preparing presentations, or managing complex workflows.
Meta has said that the Manus team will help deliver general purpose AI agents across both consumer and business products, including Meta AI. Standalone Manus subscriptions for businesses will continue to be available.
Regulatory Attention and Past Tests
The Manus deal has attracted attention from Chinese authorities. In January, Beijing confirmed it was reviewing the acquisition to ensure it does not breach technology export rules or national security regulations.
Meta has already tested paid features in limited ways. Last year, some Facebook users in the UK and US were restricted on how many links they could share in posts unless they subscribed. Meta described this as a test to see whether extended posting features offered added value.
Ad Free Options Already Rolling Out
In late January, users in the UK began receiving notifications about a monthly subscription priced at two pounds ninety nine. This option allows access to ad free versions of Facebook and Instagram. In the European Union, a similar plan costs five euros ninety nine per month.
Users can choose between paying for an ad free experience or continuing to use the platforms for free with personalized advertising.
Paid Verification Continues
Meta also continues to offer paid verification. Launched in 2023, this service gives users a blue verification badge on Facebook and Instagram for a monthly fee.
With these trials, Meta is steadily shifting toward a mixed model that combines free access with optional paid upgrades.
