Brooklyn, NY – Authorities arrested a 36-year-old man from Minnesota after he allegedly tried to impersonate an FBI agent to free Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024.
Impersonation Attempt at Brooklyn Jail
Mark Anderson reportedly approached the intake area at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday. He claimed to be an FBI agent and said he had paperwork “signed by a judge” to authorize the release of an inmate.
When officers asked for credentials, Anderson provided a Minnesota driver’s license and claimed to have weapons. He reportedly threw several documents at the jail staff, prompting authorities to detain him immediately.
Weapons Found in Bag
A search of Anderson’s bag revealed a large two-pronged fork, similar to a barbecue utensil, and a tool resembling a pizza cutter. Authorities confirmed he had traveled from Mankato, Minnesota, for a job opportunity and had been working at a local pizzeria.
Anderson is now facing charges of impersonating an officer. He appeared before a judge on Thursday but has not yet entered a plea.
Background on Luigi Mangione
Mangione has been held at the Brooklyn jail since 2024. He was arrested in Pennsylvania at a McDonald’s after a multi-state manhunt and later extradited to New York. He faces state and federal charges in the murder of Brian Thompson and has pleaded not guilty.
Since his arrest, Mangione has gained attention online and at court appearances. His case also sparked a national debate about healthcare costs in the United States. Jury selection for Mangione’s federal trial is scheduled for September.
Online Support and Legal Attention
Authorities say Mangione has attracted a significant following, with some supporters appearing at court hearings. The impersonation attempt by Anderson highlights the unusual attention the case has received nationwide.
