Trump Criticizes Hess
President Donald Trump criticized U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess after Hess said he had “mixed emotions” about representing the United States at the Winter Olympics.
On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social, calling Hess “a real loser.” He added that if Hess didn’t want to represent the U.S., he shouldn’t have tried out for the team. Furthermore, Trump said, “Very hard to root for someone like this.”
Hess Shares His Thoughts on Team USA
Hess, a freestyle skier, spoke at a news conference Friday about representing the U.S. amid political tensions. He said, “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now. It’s a little hard.”
However, he clarified that he values representing his friends, family, and the positive aspects of America. “Wearing the flag doesn’t mean I support everything happening in the U.S.,” he explained.
Hess Posts on Social Media
On social media, Hess wrote, “I love my country. There is so much that is great about America, but there are things that could be better. One amazing thing about this country is our right to speak out. The Olympics bring people together, and that’s needed more than ever. I can’t wait to represent Team USA next week.”
Political Context
Hess’s comments came as criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies and its handling of protests in Minnesota increased. Federal agents recently shot two U.S. citizens during the protests. As a result, the topic drew attention from athletes and media alike.
Other Athletes React
Hess’s teammate Chris Lillis also expressed concern about U.S. issues. He told reporters he felt “heartbroken about what’s happened in the United States.”
Moreover, Lillis stressed the need to respect everyone’s rights and treat citizens fairly. He said Olympic athletes show the values the country hopes to represent.
