Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, will miss their opening T20 World Cup match against Ireland after suffering a testicular injury during a training session in Colombo. The 34-year-old was hit in the groin while receiving throw downs on Sunday, ruling him out of the Group B clash.
All-rounder Travis Head stepped in as captain for the match against Ireland in Marsh’s absence.

Smith, 36, has scored 1,094 runs in 55 T20 innings for Australia, averaging 24.86. He last represented Australia in this format in February 2024.

Mitchell Marsh was appointed Australia’s T20 captain in April 2024. He has scored 2,102 runs in 78 T20 internationals, maintaining an average of 32.33, and has also taken 17 wickets.
