Authorities announced Friday that 43 people had been killed in two attacks in Kurram, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as they enforced a curfew and cut off mobile communication in the isolated mountainous area.
Two distinct Shia convoys traveling with police escorts were shot at by gunmen on Thursday in Kurram district, which is close to the Afghanistan border and has a history of violent sectarian conflicts.
Conflicts between sectarian tribes in the formerly semi-autonomous region have been reoccurring for a number of months.
Javed Ullah Mehsud, a top administration official, stated that 43 people had been killed in yesterday’s attack on a convoy in Kurram.
“There are seven women and three children among the victims,” Mehsud stated, adding that 11 of the 16 injured were in critical condition.
