Scenic Road Washed Away by Storms
Severe storms recently damaged sea defences along the A379 road between Torcross and Slapton, Devon, causing parts of the coastal road to collapse into the sea. Locals describe the loss as catastrophic, as the road plays a vital role in daily life and the local economy.
Resident Steve Kilpatrick emphasized how crucial the road is, saying it supports local businesses and keeps the village connected. “That road is so important for the economy,” he said. Authorities warn the road may remain closed until 2027 while plans for reconstruction are discussed.
Local Businesses Struggle
Businesses in the area have suffered major setbacks due to the road closure. Sanders, a local pub owner, explained that trade dropped by 80 percent as visitors assumed the establishments were closed. She stressed the need for long-term repairs, stating, “We are still here and open for business, but we need the road back.”
Floodwaters have entered his patio four times in two weeks, and the house shook violently during storms. Searle admitted feeling unsafe in his home, fearing the roof might collapse.
Other residents, including Steve Kilpatrick, reported emotional distress and damage in their neighborhoods. While his own home remained intact, he highlighted that many affected residents were “in pieces” after the storms.
Calls for Government Support
Local leaders are calling for urgent government funding to rebuild the road. The A379 is not only a lifeline for villagers but also essential for tourism and local trade. Officials are working with authorities to assess reconstruction plans and restore safe access.
