A farmer behind a well-known group of lively, free-roaming pigs in the Norfolk market town of Aylsham says the animals bring joy to the community despite growing complaints from some residents.
The pigs, owned by DW Filby & Sons, often wander along Marriott’s Way — a 26-mile walking route leading to Norwich. Their daily adventures have become popular online, with a dedicated Facebook group reaching more than 500 members. But while many people find them amusing, others argue the situation has become a nuisance.
According to farmer Mr. Filby, the pigs will be relocated next week. He also claims his fences are regularly tampered with and says many walkers ignore the countryside code by failing to close gates properly.
One resident who meets the pigs frequently raised concerns that they could run onto the main road, creating a safety hazard. They also said it would help if the farmer put up signs explaining who to contact when a pig is loose, as the animals often remain out for days.
Another resident reported a pig charging at them, while others have helped guide the animals back to the farm. Some locals say the situation is affecting public safety and complain that the smell along the route has become “unbearable.”
Despite the criticism, Mr. Filby insists the pigs are harmless and bring positivity to the area.
“It’s all meant to be good fun and completely safe,” he said. “People love seeing the pigs — they make the community smile. The situation is exaggerated because it’s unusual, but they’re not dangerous. If anyone spots one roaming, they should simply contact us.”
Aylsham Town Council has chosen not to comment on the issue.
