The survivors of the Afghan earthquakes pledged not to return to the wrecked villages but to camp in fields and on riverbanks instead, even without tents to protect themselves from the rain, because they were afraid that aftershocks may bring rocks tumbling down from the mountains.
Adam Khan, 67, a farmer in the village of Masud in the eastern province of Kunar, Afghanistan, which was devastated by earthquakes and their aftershocks last week, said, “We have no shelter, not even a tent,” as he leaned on a stick outside his destroyed house.
“It rained last night, we had no place to take cover,” he continued. “Our biggest fear is the big rocks that could come down at any moment.”
On September 1, there were two earthquakes that left over 2,200 people dead and over 3,600 injured.
