In a historic speech, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa became the first Syrian leader to address the United Nations General Assembly in almost 60 years.
Al-Sharaa began by characterizing Syria’s journey as one that is “filled with emotions, and it mixes pain with hope.” He referred to it as a conflict “between good and evil,” emphasizing that the country had suffered through decades of oppression and adversity.
The Syrian president emphasized Syria’s historic relevance despite years of turmoil by claiming to be from Damascus, the capital of history and the cradle of civilizations.
Resilience and repression
Al-Sharaa said Syrians have endured “injustice, deprivation, and oppression” over the previous 60 years. He did, however, draw attention to what he called a watershed last December.
