Security forces have successfully evacuated all students and staff from Cadet College Wana in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after a terrorist attack, officials confirmed Tuesday. The operation has now entered its final phase, with forces working to eliminate the remaining militants.
Authorities stressed that the cautious approach was essential due to the presence of Afghan Khawarij terrorists inside the college, prioritizing the safety of approximately 650 people, including 525 cadets.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that at least three personnel lost their lives during the ongoing operation. “The terrorists attempted to take hostages but failed. They were in communication with handlers in Afghanistan,” he said.
Earlier, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that Indian-backed militants launched the attack using a vehicle-borne explosive device, striking the main gate and damaging nearby structures. Two attackers were neutralized immediately, while three others were trapped inside the college.
Officials condemned the attack, calling it an attempt to instill fear among the youth pursuing quality education in the tribal areas. The military reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to respond against terrorist networks and leadership operating from Afghan soil.
This assault follows the breakdown of peace talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime, though a ceasefire remains in effect. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that sustainable peace in the region requires Afghanistan to control militant groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from its territory.
