According to a union representative who talked with News, an aircraft tire exploded.
Shortly after five in the morning (10 am UK time), a number of fire and police units were dispatched to a hangar at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.
The airline announced that it is investigating and collaborating with regional law enforcement.
“The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility,” the airline said in a statement.
We have given family members and coworkers our undivided support at this extremely trying period.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed through a spokeswoman that the organization has also opened an investigation.
Part of Delta TechOps, which handles maintenance, repair, and overhaul work for Delta and more than 150 aviation and airline customers worldwide, is the wheel and brake maintenance facility where the explosion occurred.
With 104 million passengers handled in 2023, Atlanta airport was named the busiest in the world.
