Family Left Shocked by Arrest
The uncle of the man arrested in connection with the murder investigation of former politician Ann Widdecombe has described his disbelief after learning about his nephew’s arrest. He said the news left him stunned and admitted he never imagined his nephew could be linked to such a serious crime.
According to the uncle, his nephew was always a quiet, polite, and respectful young man. Although they have not spent much time together over the past decade, he remembers him as shy and gentle. He added that the allegations do not match the person he has known for many years.
Police Continue Murder and Terrorism Investigation
Police are investigating the death of Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on 9 July after she was believed to have been attacked a day earlier. Investigators confirmed she suffered serious injuries.
A 28 year old British man was arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murder. He also faces investigation over the alleged commission, preparation, or encouragement of terrorist related acts.
Counter terrorism officers believe the attack was targeted. However, investigators are still working to establish the motive and determine what led to the incident.
Neighbours Recall Suspect’s Daily Routine
People living near the suspect also expressed surprise after the arrest. One neighbour said the man rarely left his home following the recent death of his father. She recalled seeing him regularly take his father shopping before his passing.
The neighbour also noticed that the suspect’s vehicle left the property early on the morning of 8 July and returned later that evening. She said this stood out because the car was usually parked outside the house.
The suspect’s uncle also questioned the reported journey. He explained that driving from South Yorkshire to Devon and back in a single day would require a long trip. He added that he passed his nephew’s home almost every day and normally saw the vehicle parked there.
Tributes Continue for Ann Widdecombe
The investigation has prompted tributes from across the political world. Many people have remembered Ann Widdecombe for her long career in public service and her contributions to British politics.
She served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Maidstone for more than two decades. During the government of former Prime Minister John Major, she held ministerial roles in the Home Office and the employment department.
After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe remained a well known public figure. She appeared on television programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later represented South West England in the European Parliament for the Brexit Party before joining Reform UK in 2023.
Police continue gathering evidence as detectives work to establish the motive behind the attack. The investigation remains ongoing.
