Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5.5, a new artificial intelligence model, just days after reports said the company was considering another model release to respond to growing competition from OpenAI. The launch comes as Anthropic prepares for a potential initial public offering and faces pressure to balance rapid AI development with safety and profitability.

The release also follows CEO Dario Amodei’s call for the AI industry to slow the pace of capability improvements because of safety concerns. Anthropic’s latest move shows the challenge facing major AI companies as they compete for enterprise customers while trying to control development costs and manage growing safety concerns.

Why it matters The launch comes as Anthropic faces growing competition, safety concerns and pressure to improve profitability.

Anthropic Launches Claude Opus 5.5

The original report said Anthropic was weighing the cost of releasing another model against the need to improve profitability. People familiar with the company’s plans also said Anthropic was evaluating the safety of its next model.

Anthropic did not comment on the Reuters report at the time. The company subsequently released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22.

Anthropic’s new model is priced at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. The company said that is 20 percent below the price of its previous Opus model.

OpenAI Competition Adds Pressure

OpenAI’s GPT 6 Astra was released on September 3 and has gained traction among businesses and developers.

Data cited by news showed Astra representing about 13 percent of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp, compared with about 8 percent for Anthropic’s Claude Fable. The report stated that users spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic models during the week covered by the report.

These figures provide a snapshot of activity rather than a complete measurement of the global enterprise AI market. Enterprise adoption can also change as companies test and deploy new models.

Anthropic Maintains Strong Revenue Growth

Despite the pressure from OpenAI, Anthropic has continued to report rapid revenue growth.

News reported that Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by the end of July, compared with about $9 billion at the end of 2025. OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate passed $40 billion in July, according to the same report.

Anthropic is also reported to be targeting revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion in 2028. That figure is a company projection reported by Reuters, not a guaranteed future result.

AI Safety Remains Part of the Debate

The timing of Anthropic’s model release is notable because Amodei recently called for a slower pace of AI development.

In an essay released on September 12, Amodei wrote, “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”

Despite that call, Anthropic has continued developing and releasing new systems. The company said Claude Opus 5.5 received additional external safety testing and includes safeguards that had previously been used only with its most capable systems.

Open Source AI Creates Another Challenge

Competition is not limited to Anthropic and OpenAI.

Investors cited by Reuters said open source and open weight AI models could put additional pressure on the business models of major commercial AI providers.

These models can give companies more control over how AI systems are developed and operated and can reduce dependence on external providers.

Anthropic IPO Plans

Anthropic is preparing for a potential initial public offering, although the timing remains uncertain.

The report said that the company could push the offering until after the November US midterm elections. Earlier plans had reportedly expected marketing to begin in mid October at the earliest.

The company therefore faces pressure on several fronts at once. It must compete with other AI developers, demonstrate continued revenue growth and address investor concerns about profitability and spending.

Anthropic Faces Growing AI Competition

Anthropic has moved from considering another model release to launching Claude Opus 5.5 as competition in the AI market intensifies. The release comes at a sensitive time for the company, with enterprise competition, safety concerns, profitability and a possible IPO all shaping its strategy.

For now, Anthropic is continuing to expand its model lineup while emphasizing lower operating costs and additional safety testing. The company’s ability to maintain enterprise demand while managing those competing priorities will remain an important issue for investors and customers.
