President Calls Out Foreign Policy Gaffes
President Donald Trump said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s answers at the Munich Security Conference reflected poorly on the United States. The New York lawmaker, also considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, faced criticism for stalling on questions and making geographic errors.
Trump highlighted two examples: AOC hesitated for nearly 20 seconds when asked if the U.S. should defend Taiwan in case of a Chinese invasion, and she mistakenly claimed Venezuela lies south of the equator.
Comparisons to Other Leaders
On Air Force One, Trump compared AOC’s performance to that of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. He said both leaders “gave a bad look for our country” and questioned their competency in handling international issues. Trump added that while former Secretary Hillary Clinton is competent, AOC and Newsom were unprepared to answer basic questions on global affairs.
Trump also criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s ability to handle local matters, noting that New York City faces significant challenges.
AOC’s Responses at the Conference
During the conference, Ocasio-Cortez attempted to address the Taiwan question cautiously. She emphasized avoiding conflict and stated that the U.S. should use economic and diplomatic strategies to prevent confrontations with China.
Regarding Venezuela, she clarified her remarks about the nation’s location, saying that while Maduro acted as an anti-democratic leader, it does not justify “kidnapping a head of state or engaging in acts of war” simply because the country is south of the equator.
Reactions from Newsom’s Office
A spokesperson for Newsom dismissed Trump’s comments, accusing him of prioritizing coal and Big Oil and failing to represent America’s interests abroad. They added that foreign leaders are increasingly aligning with California’s policies.
