Incident in Chakwal, Punjab
Nine year old Hania Ahmed was travelling with her family in Pakistan during a holiday. On 10 June, armed robbers stopped their rental car in Chakwal, Punjab. The attackers took the family hostage at gunpoint.
Police arrived after the robbery began. During the response, gunfire broke out between the suspects and police.
Police account vs family statement
Punjab police said the suspects opened fire first. They said an officer believed the suspects were escaping in the family vehicle and fired, which led to the death of the child and injuries to her father and brother. The officer has been taken into custody.
The girl’s father gave a different account. He said police fired first during the incident.
International response from Australia
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for a full investigation. He said authorities must explain what happened and ensure full transparency for the family and the public.
He also said Australia expects a clear and proper inquiry into the case.

Hania’s school community in Perth expressed deep sadness. Her school principal described her as friendly, lively, and very social.
Teachers said she respected everyone and had many friends. The school arranged counselling support for students and staff. Many classmates remain distressed after the news.

Punjab police said the officer involved has been suspended and placed under custody. They stated that they are carrying out a detailed investigation into whether proper procedures were followed.
Police also said they will review all actions taken during the operation.
